Water Yam (Dioscorea alata L.) Growth and Tuber Yield as Affected by Rotation and Fertilization Regimes across an Environmental Gradient in West Africa

چکیده
Yam (Dioscorea spp.) is a staple food crop and source of income for millions people in West Africa. Traditionally, Africa, yams are grown without any external inputs, leading to low tuber yields. The rapid decrease yield observed after the first yam cropping season has been ascribed nutrient depletion and/or accumulation yam-specific pests diseases. This led farmers grow on new surfaces under fallow each year. Using transdisciplinary approach, we identified different yam-based rotations fertilization regimes that could stabilize production rotational systems improve water (D. alata) productivity. These innovations were tested researcher-managed field trials established along an environmental gradient crossing four growing zones spanning from Humid Forest (Liliyo Côte d’Ivoire) Derived Savanna/Forest Transition (Tiéningboué d’Ivoire), Southern Guinean Savanna (Midebdo Burkina Faso), Northern (Léo Faso) between 2016 2018. factor implemented at site included control with no (NON), sole mineral as NPK (MIN), combined organic (MINORG) manure (ORG), while rotation cereal (YamCer), legume (YamLeg), white (YamYam). average yields 32.8, 20.3, 2.7, 2.5 t fresh matter ha?1 2016, 16.4, 10.7, 8.9, 5.2 2018 Liliyo, Tiéningboué, Midebdo, Léo, respectively. most important determinants total amount rainfall recorded during period initiation maximum canopy development, soil carbon stocks 0–30-cm layer. Comparative Evaluation of Physico-chemical Characteristics of Flours from Steeped Tubers of White Yam (Dioscorea rotundata Poir), Water Yam (Dioscorea alata L.) and Yellow Yam (Dioscorea cayenensis Lam)
The study examined Yam Tuber Species (YTS), Tuber Steeping Duration (TSD) and Flour Particle Size (FPS) as factors of flour. Data were collected using white yam, water yam and yellow yam steeped in water (30 ± 2 °C, pH 6.78) and withdrawn, and the flour classified, and analyzed for each parameter. Results obtained showed that all the test parameters, Water Retention Capacity (WRC), Swelling Ind...

PREMISE OF THE STUDY Dioscorea alata L. is one of the most widely distributed species of the genus in the humid and semihumid tropics and is associated with traditional agriculture. Only a few microsatellite markers have been developed so far for this and other Dioscorea species. METHODS AND RESULTS We isolated 14 codominant polymorphic microsatellite markers using a microsatellite-enriched g...
متن کاملEffects of planting methods and tuber weights on growth and yield of yam cultivars (Dioscorea rotundata Poir.) in Gabon
A study was conducted to investigate the influence of planting methods and tuber weight on growth and yield of local yam cultivars obtained by the minisett technique from white yam (D. rotundata) in Gabon. Trials were carried out in 2014 and 2015 at the experimental ground of the Higher National Institute of Agronomy and Biotechnology, under natural conditions of lightness, temperature and rela...
متن کاملPotato yield and tuber quality as affected by gibberellic acid and zinc sulfate
Abstract Obtaining high potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) tuber yield through increased number and weight of quality tubers is important for farmers while the quality factors are of interest for food processing industries. Potato processing industries require high quality tubers having the highest possible dry matter, starch and protein contents. A two-year field study was carried out as a factoria...
متن کاملDistribution, management and diversity of yam local varieties in Brazil: a study on Dioscorea alata L.
Widely spread in the tropics, yams were introduced into Brazil during the colonial period and are currently grown throughout the country. Despite its importance as a pharmacological and food source, there is a lack of studies describing how and where this tuber is grown in Brazil. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the cultivation and distribution of Dioscorea alata in differen...
